In ecology, a niche refers to the place or position occupied by an organism or a population within an ecological community called the ecosystem. It is the term which defines the role the organism or the population plays in the general scheme of things. The niche an organism or a population holds is the one responsible for dictating the ability of the species to survive. It is the one which spells whether an organism or a population will perish or thrive.

In marketing, a niche refers to a service or a product that occupies a special area of demand. It is that small corner in the market that accounts for a certain kind of specialty concerning an unmet customer need. To be able to attract a strong, solid market, the choice of a niche product should ultimately complement the website one owns. It is through this scheme that he is able to generate a specific market for the niche product he is trying to sell.

Niches are involved in niche marketing, the process of finding market segments that are small but potentially profitable nonetheless. To maintain a profitable quantity of sales, this marketing strategy relies on increasing the loyalty of customers so that their corporate objectives will be met or surpassed. Illustrative of this is the fact that the quality of the product or service sold will generate customer satisfaction and, consequently, customer loyalty. The result is profitability garnered through a solid market base that trusts in the ability of the product or service to really deliver.

One of the great things about niche marketing is that it encourages those who indulge in it to be unique and one-of-a-kind. Here one is not forced into the lion’s den and made to compete against established marketers. He is made to occupy a strong and secure position that ultimately wins him a real place in the market. Niche marketing differs from other online marketing strategies because this particular quality allows it to operate almost autonomously and without having to contend with corporate sharks that tear each other to pieces.

One of the most important things that should be thought over by those involved in this type of business is the niche business that is going to be involved in the process. It is important to consider the type of business that one is going to work on to be able to ensure himself of the success that he hopes to have. It is also important for him to know everything about the niche business at hand. Learning the tricks of the trade in is one of the things that one could do to make a niche business prosper tremendously.

Being able to reach the niche market is another consideration to make. In doing so, one should know the exact phrases that people are searching for. The use of tools can help a lot in knowing the type of keywords that should be used to make the business profitable. Targeting the right keywords does a lot in making this type of business soar.

Those who engage in niche marketing know that determining the potential of a niche before doing everything else is a must if one wants to save all the time and effort that might be wasted if he plunges into everything head on. Building a niche marketing site that proves to be profitable should be done after an unsatisfied customer demand is identified, and marketing the site appropriately by reaching out to customers the best possible way is what niche marketers should consider if they want their business to reach skyrocketing success.

Is niche marketing needed in a world teeming with a hundred like systems designed for people to make money online? Those who know how the system works will answer in the affirmative, because niche marketing is the only system capable of filling up a gaping hole in the market by catering to the unsatisfied needs of customers – needs that are usually not given notice by those in the big league. Though niche marketing, one is able to gain a foothold in the market by being a needle in a haystack. Small and inconspicuous it may be, but its ability to sting someone so madly once it is found will render him more than surprised.

The first thing that comes to your mind when brainstorming for a new website is ‘What subject should I use?’. This is one of the most brain-wrecking situation you may encounter if you have absolutely no ideas where to start from. I, too, encounter this problem and I will now share with you the step-by-step how I choose my niches.

Step 1: Popular Trends & Keywords Start by going to established websites that provide trends, search patterns, popular searches and such. These websites usually have a list of topics (read: niches) that are searched regularly by users. Here are some websites I use:
• Google Zeitgeist
• Google Trends
• Google Hot Trends
• Yahoo! Buzz
• eBay Hot Products
Browse through the searches done and copy down any niche that you deemed feasible into a list. Remember to choose niches that you are interested in or have some level of expertise in, else writing content for such niches will be diffcult. If you are looking to monetize your website with Google Adsense, look at Top Paying Adsense Keywords for a niche that is highly profitable but competitive.

Step 2: Refine and Expand your List of Niches
You should now have a list of niches, probably around 5-10 for a start. What you are going to do now is to refine the list. What do I mean? Take for example, I found the term ‘NBA’ in Yahoo! Buzz as a popular search term. Now, I don’t know about you but NBA is a very wide term. It can mean anything, ‘NBA seasons’, ‘NBA players, ‘NBA teams’, etc.
When facing a niche this wide, you might be at a loss on what to focus. And such niches are usually very competitive. Not what you want, right? Use these 2 free tools Keyword Discovery and MIVA to generate a list of related sub-niches, with the search volumes included.
The higher the search volumes, the more popular the search term is. Of course, the sub-niches are usually less popular than the main one. For the term ‘NBA’, using MIVA tool, I got ‘NBA’ at 70405 searches and ‘NBA tickets’ 33693. At first glance, NBA seems better than NBA tickets. I then googled both terms and got a search results of 197,000,000 for ‘NBA’ and 4,110,000 for ‘NBA tickets’.
A whole 197,000,000 results for NBA! Thats alot of competition, especially for novices. ‘NBA tickets’ seems like a much better niche now. Almost half the popularity of NBA, but more than 40 times lower the competition. Another term ‘authentic nba jersey’ seems like a good niche too. Refine and expand your list of niches to less competitive ones or keep them if you want. You can also use the tools to look for niches related to those on your list.

Step 3: Analyse your Niches
Ok, this is rather trickly, analysing your niches. You will be looking for niches that are popular but have little competition. This is similiar to Step 2 but way more in-depth. You will want to look at the top competitors for your niches. Check out how strong your competitors are by looking at their websites.
Some of the things you should look at are their…
• Number of Backlinks
• Backlinks from Authority Sites
• PageRank
• Alexa Rank
• Onpage Optimization
There are some tools that you can use to check on all these. I recommend SEO for Firefox and SearchStatus. The Google Toolbar can be used to check for backlinks, PR and the last cached version of the webpage. These are all free add-ons for the web browser Firefox
Researching all these takes time and you won’t get all the in-depths. After analysing your competition, remove niches from your list that you deemed too tough for you. Your list of niche should now be smaller, maybe 1-5. Keep this list of niche and whenever you have time to start a new website, look back at it and see if you can work something out of these niches.

First of all, a niche is not a gimmick encased in a silver bullet. A niche is nothing more than a fancy word for a specialty and specializing is the name of the game in growing a small business today.

Niches are at the heart of every successful business, product or service. Niche marketing is the polar opposite of mass marketing. Mass marketers often have their own niche as in always low prices. . . always (WalMart).

A small independent business or business professional needs to clearly isolate exactly what their business has or does better than their competition including the mass marketers.

Whether your business is mature, in a start-up mode or you are just contemplating, you need to identify specific customer needs (NOT wants) that have been ignored, overlooked or neglected by others.

These opportunities represent niche areas that you can specialize in and capitalize upon to grow, start or build your business.

Identifying a niche is not a destination, however. It is and must continue to be a work in progress. The reason for this is that the marketplace and consumers continue to change before our very eyes.

You and your business, your product mix, your menu of services must be capable of changing with the times. The big boxes (mass merchants) with their corporate headquarters far a field are usually slow to pick up on changes in localized markets.

That fact gives small local businesses an advantage IF the business owner or manager has their pulse in synch with their local customers.

You need to think sideways, backwards and outside-in about your present or potential customers and how they are currently being served in your local marketplace. When you do, you are bound to come up with a good niche concept.

If you constantly see agitated customers waiting in line at the big box stores, make sure every customer in your store is waited on promptly and courteously. That is not easy to do, but the payoff can be huge.

If you feel like ripping the phone out of the wall when you call a business and are put through the press one, press two routine, see to it that YOUR phone is answered PROMPTLY by a REAL person who has a friendly phone presence and a smiling personality.

Again, not easy to pull off, but IF you can do it; the payoff will be well worth the effort.

If your local research shows that prospects are turned off by the fact that they do not get their calls or questions answered PROMPTLY, take the necessary steps to see that every customer and prospect receives immediate attention from you and your staff.

Here are six compelling reasons why every small business needs a niche:

1. A niche increases your chances of survival by insulating you from the whims of the marketplace.

2. A niche increases the effectiveness of your advertising allowing you to concentrate on a clearly defined audience instead of aimlessly prattling on to everyone.

3. You will experience less competition because a niche will position you as a leader in your chosen area and not as just another business.

4. Your business will be more profitable because you

will have better control of your pricing and your promotional expenditures.

5. The hour-to-hour changes blowing through your

marketplace will affect you less because you can spot the change and act upon it immediately.

6. You will be able to build your business faster by making fewer mistakes as regards who you are, who your customers are and how you can cost effectively reach them.

As a mentor and motivational speaker, I teach people key principles that work to generate wealth for themselves over and over again. I believe anyone who has the desire can start a motivational speaking career especially when they have the right tools and knowledge right in their hands. Here are six things you can do to get those public speaking jobs and experience professional speaking success!

1) Know who you want to target as a market and determine your affinity within this market. Will their audience like what you have to say? Who do you relate to and what’s your message? Research your target market and see what kinds of products they purchase, what kinds of information sells in these niches, and lastly, review whether or not your materials match what you niche buys.

2) You would also want to know your competition in your niche. What are they selling and how are they doing it? (Motivational speaking tip: Never be afraid to learn from someone else.) Research is really important. As you discover how to get bookings for motivational speaking gigs, you’ll find that you’ll have a much easier time selling yourself when you know what your niche wants.

3) Create your marketing materials. When starting a motivational speaking business, get this part out the way first so you can have time to focus on marketing yourself. The easiest thing to start with is to write a book on something that you want to speak on. Pull from things that you have experience with. If you have a speech, write it down. Solve a niche problem and then create a workbook program or an audio / video training program that solves that problem. Sometimes, the market may choose you. Conference planners may tell you what they need and if you can meet those needs with your materials. Research your niche and see if there are any speakers that target what you’re targeting.

4) Decide if you are going to promote yourself over a topic as you go after public speaking jobs. If you’re wondering why you would want to promote a topic over yourself, the main reason is so that you can train other motivational speakers to do your talk. Your speakers can speak for a lower fee or you can collect a booking fee from them. Sometimes thought, a company will want only you.

5) Develop a unique selling point (USP) for yourself. Why should conference organizers hire you? You have to have a hook as you develop your motivational speaking career. Your hook may not necessarily be a physical characteristic but it is a personal branding that will help people to remember who you are.

6) Develop a marketing plan and market heavily to your niche. Consider putting together a marketing package that lets people know who you are. Include your biography, a photo, a demo clip (audio or video), price sheet of your product for sale, testimonials and possibly even a sample client list. Get all of your marketing materials finished and then market, market, market! If nobody knows about you, they can’t book you!

In the world of Internet niche marketing, the greatest asset is often the chosen niche. Many marketers spend a great deal of time, energy and resources selecting a niche which they believe is going to be profitable.

There are certainly no guarantees a particular niche will be profitable but there are certain strategies for choosing a niche that has a high probability of success.

One popular strategy for selecting a niche involves employing a principle similar to the concept of supply and demand. Statistical information supplied by search engines is used to determine the popularity of certain search terms.

This information is significant because terms which are being searched frequently are terms which have a large audience of Internet users looking for more information on the niche subject. These are terms which are in high demand.

From this statistical information you can build a list of potential niches. Once this list is compiled, it is time to begin researching the competition in each of these niches. Ideally the niche you select will be one which has a large audience and not much competition. These are niches which are in low supply.

Choose the Type of Work You Outsource Carefully

One way to protect your niche is to be selective about the type of work you outsource to others. Many Internet niche marketers are comfortable outsourcing their copywriting and their website design.

However, they are more protective about outsourcing tasks such as marketing, niche selection and keyword development. This is because although copywriting and website design both involve optimization for keywords the strategies for doing so are readily available on the Internet.

However, many marketers have specific methods for marketing and developing a niche and keywords and are not willing to outsource this work because it will likely involve sharing secret strategies.

Share Keywords via Email

Developing related keywords for the niche is a very important part of the success of an Internet niche marketing campaign. Keywords are absolutely critical and conventional wisdom holds that an extensive list of keywords should be developed for a particular niche to be successful. Some in the industry recommend developing approximately 200 keywords for each niche.

There is a great amount of effort put into the process of selecting keywords and those who are savvy do not want to make it possible for others to find their list of keywords on the Internet.

Including a list of keywords on an advertisement seeking a copywriter or website designer will be searchable by others in the industry. For this reason it is not wise to post keyword lists where others have free access to the keywords.

This may sound overly paranoid but it is commonly known that Internet marketers often make the mistake of posting their keywords on job boards and those who are interested in harvesting these keywords visit these websites frequently to gather information. Transmitting the keywords through a protected email account or via telephone is a better way to protect the work you have put into developing your niche.

Use a Non Disclosure Agreement

Finally, a non disclosure agreement (NDA) is one way for the marketer to protect his niche when he is outsourcing. An NDA is essentially a document specifying the rights of the employer and employee in regard to sensitive materials. The NDA can be drafted to include any terms the client sees fit. Some example of the restrictions the contractor may agree to by signing an NDA are:

* A definition of which materials are sensitive
* Restrictions on how materials can be transmitted
* A stipulation precluding the contractor from competing in the niche during a given time period
* A duration of time for which the contract is binding

In protecting a niche market the above terms can be used when outsourcing. The client may specify the sensitive materials to be the niche and the related keywords as well as any information regarding marketing strategy.

The client may limit the methods in which the sensitive materials can be transmitted to secure emails and telephone conversations. The duration of time for which the contract is binding is up to the client. Common timeframes include the duration of the project or a set number of days, weeks, months or years.

In niche marketing a timeframe of at least one year after the project is completed is recommended to prevent the contractors from entering the same niche immediately after the project ends.

From major companies to tiny little start ups, niche marketing seems to be the “bandwagon” everyone is jumping on these days. But there are ways to get into niche marketing that can quickly get you lost in the crowd and turn your dreams into just another “cookie cutter” nightmare and a total waste of time.

Niche Marketing, in essence is marketing. No matter what store you go into, there are niches down every aisle. You have your home goods, hardware, sporting goods, cosmetics, etc.

so niche marketing is nothing new by any means. It’s been in existence since the very first marketplace opened up somewhere during the early days of human civilization.

Not surprising then that it’s become such a big hit on the Internet where specific information is the name of the game.

The Search Engines are positioned to glean the most benefit from the niche mentality. People come to them to find specifics based on their keyword queries. So they’d be more apt to create the best algorithms and the most conducive environments to deal with these specifics or niche situations.

You as a marketer then would be putting yourself in the best position possible by aligning your sites to take advantage of the search engines’ algorithms.

Then why do so many try to sneak around them and still expect a good result?

Part of the whole niche algorithm scenario is to provide finely tuned specific information on any given topic that might be searched for. However, this is only part of it.

The other part is about the age and uniqueness of the information provided.

So the search engines try to tap into sites they can get information from that are constantly being updated with fresh information on particular subjects, because they know that if someone comes looking for something chances are they’ll come back to find more. And the more they come back to find freshly updated information that wasn’t available before, the better their searches will appear to be.

Now you need to ask yourself, “Are my sites conducive to providing fresh content that the search engines can constantly come back to?”

If you’re using those ready made niche package templates the answer would probably be no, because even though these packages come with hundreds of articles included, they inevitably share one characteristic.

They’re all static.

Static or never changing content is not good in an environment where new information is being sought after, obviously. In fact, having old and duplicate content about a specific subject might be seen as equally irrelevant as if you were talking “apples and oranges.”

But then how does one break into a new niche market with fresh content on a site that’s constantly being updated all the time?

One problem that arises out of all of this is that niche marketing has never been a big money maker for a single niche. Sure there have been a couple instances where someone taps into a niche and creates an explosion of sales, buys a big house and retires off the revenue. But for the most part, niche marketing is about making a little money from a lot of niches and letting it all add up to making a decent living.

So how does a marketer create lots of niches and constantly keep them updated without having to give up the rest of their lives activities, like eating and sleeping?

After all, if you had to actively update hundreds of niche sites every day you wouldn’t have time for much else, right?

The trick would be to have a site that other people update for you, which is totally possible if you owned an article directory that self moderates itself.

The problem is that most article directory scripts are set up to be multiple category sites that cover just about every topic ever searched for, and for the most part, they’re not self moderating.

There is one article directory script that can be tuned to a specific niche topic and does self moderate, meaning that it accepts or rejects articles automatically based on category and keyword choice.

It’s been designed with niche marketers in mind and overcomes all the shortcomings the other article directory scripts have had for niche marketing.

It’s called Niche Master Directory. Easy to install, adaptable to just about any webpage template, and can be set up thousands of times on different sites and different specific niches.

Most importantly, Niche Master Directory works with the search engines rather than against them!

So for the time it takes to set up those pre-packaged niche templates, and for a one time cost rather than a monthly subscription you often have to pay to get the packages, Niche Master Directory is a much better option.

All videos used in the study were shot as though amateur publishers created the clips. However, the entire video production of 28 short clips cost around $9,500. All videos had no promotional content, no product placement, no sales message and no tricky segue to a sales patch found on the landing page. The study not only focused on increasing web site traffic, but also the conversion of traffic into subscriptions, clickthroughs or sale.

In two months that the 28 videos were uploaded in YouTube and Google Video, they were viewed over 320,000 times without any fee. Moreover, aside from the considerable increase in web site traffic, 1.5% of viewers became newsletter subscribers. Compared to Pay-Per-Click advertising that costs 30 cents per click, YouTube is more powerful in increasing web site traffic because at no cost, they achieved the same number of new subscribers through the 28 videos.

If you really want to increase web site traffic using YouTube, The Wall Street Journal suggests tips in creating YouTube videos that will generate a massive buzz.

First of all, you need to understand that beauty still reigns supreme. Just like television shows and movies, people search for attractive people in YouTube. To prove that beauty sells easily compared to other niches, you should Google’s “ultimate traffic bait internet porno stats”, which received more than 350,000 views because of the beautiful girl it featured.

Another tested trick is to build a network or fan base that will follow your YouTube success. Just as LonelyGirl15, which had a large network of subscribers, became a smash hit to the Internet community. Of course, to increase web site traffic using videos, you need to create as professional looking as possible. Once you received regular viewers, you need to be consistent and highlight videos that your viewers find interesting.

Since you are using YouTube to increase your web site traffic, your niche is already chosen. However, you should remember to place your URL on every video that you create. Otherwise, any potential subscriber, customer or visitor will not find your website. If you’re interested in more valuable tips to increase web site traffic via YouTube, use Google to find YouTube Traffic Generation Sites.

Marketing strategies vary for all sorts of reasons, the most important being the return on investment. Niche marketing has proven to be a top marketing strategy that has a high R.O.I.

For instance, ServicesAreUs.com caters:

  * first to those that want a home based business,

  * then to those that want an online home based business,

  * then to those that are interested in a specific home based business opportunity (Google Adwords, Adsense, Affiliate marketing, etc).

  * How to create a website that search engines will reward with high page rank.

This strategy has proven to work well for those who do not want to limit their field of competition to one niche. This broad marketing strategy is used to allow webmasters to take advantage of multiple niches within one market. Niche marketing is an important factor in eCommerce.

As stated above, because I have started with a broad market I am able to also targeted niches within this market. This will allow ServicesAreUs.com to be an authority on online home based business strategy, planning and opportunities.

With niche marketing you are unable to compete in broader areas of your market without possibly misleading search engine robots about the theme of your website.

If I were a Niche website I’d target only a small segment of home based business opportunities. For instance, financial management, legal, home office setup, etc either one would be a good start for a Niche website.

Niche websites when structured correctly are very successful, since there are numerous avenues you can use to market to your audience.

The mistake novas online marketers make is not knowing the size of the market they are catering to. Some may think they are catering to a Niche market and it turns out to be a broad market.

Don’t worry about making a mistake like this because if you are consistently doing research on your market (broad or Niche) you will catch it soon and make the appropriate adjustments to your strategy.

Remember, mistakes are how we learn but research can prevent you from making multiple mistakes in the first place.

Many Niche marketers sell products such as downloadable books (eBooks) which is very profitable because when done correctly you have a targeted audience you can in most cases sell to many times over.

For instance, a “managing business finances” ebook may be attractive to those who purchased the “managing family finances” ebook.

Niche marketing is a great fit for those that have a tangible product. Many niche marketers use Affiliate marketing to assist in product sales.

Broad marketing on the other hand starts from the top of a market then branches out like roots on a tree. If structured correctly a broad marketing website will allow you to offer your audience more information.

Broad markets can compete with niche markets on some of the more targeted subnets. Some Internet marketers market via blogs which have proven to be as lucrative as having your niche or broad market on a website.

While there are many marketing strategies and tips you can limit the headache by concentrating on mastering one before integrating or moving to the other.

Although you will not hear this very often, niche marketing research is the most important thing you can do before you launch your next money-making affiliate campaign. Certainly, you will enjoy the rare oddity of a great business opportunity almost literally falling into your lap, but you cannot predicate your entire financial future on luck, good or bad. Truth be told, you will have to roll up your sleeves and do some real niche marketing research in order to enjoy continuous success as an Internet Marketer.

Perhaps one of the reasons for the lack of forthrightness on the part of some marketers is the sheer volume of work involved in finding and exploiting profitable niches online. If you know something involves a lot of work, you may be less inclined to do it. By niche marketing, I mean that smaller section of a larger market for goods and services that lends itself to the following factors: People are spending money in that sector, and the market is not too crowded by other vendors or affiliates who are sell to that market. A good example of a niche would be “dog training schools in Britain” as compared to “dog training”.

Obviously, the smaller the niche, the fewer purchases will be made by the people who need the product or service, and so is the number of people selling in that market. Therein lies your opportunity. I am not telling you all of this to discourage you. Rather I am trying to inject some pragmatism into an often-overlooked, hyped-up process. In order to find and exploit the many potentially lucrative niches that are available online, here are 3 pillars that you must build on when you are doing niche marketing research. They should always be your foundation for any future online marketing venture.

1. Look for a Proven Market for the Service or Product. Before you spend money trying to sell in any niche, you have to be certain that people are buying the product or services available. This is usually found from research companies, or from vendors who keep records. Click bank for example has a benchmark that will tell you how well a product is selling. The higher the gravity of a product, the more units of that product have been sold. If you are going to sell a ClickBank product, you should at least make sure that Click bank’s gravity score for that product is reasonably good.

2. Make sure the market is willing to pay the price of the product. A good niche research program will give you vital information about a niche that many marketers will never take the time to uncover for themselves. You will want to make sure that the market that exists for your product is willing to spend money to purchase what you are selling. Niche marketing research in this area may be difficult to do, but you can find this kind of information in places like Forrester Research, eBay, Amazon, Google, and many others.

If the vendor you are thinking of representing is of good repute, you may even look at their data for sales of this product. This should include specifics such as how much people are willing to pay for the product.

3. Find and use the best keywords for your products. Keywords are the currency of online marketing research. In affiliate marketing, success in business is all about having the right keywords. Your potential customers will be using keywords to find your products, and your affiliate managers will be using keywords to find you. Merchants are constantly looking for the best keywords to sell their products. If you follow the keywords, they are going to lead you to the money. It happens all the time.

Now, if you thought that proper niche marketing research only involved finding appropriate long-tailed keywords, think again. The thoroughness of your niche market research will pay off in big earnings for many months and years to come. Marketers, who have the budget, and staff, will have many more options to round out their knowledge of a niche before they start selling. Other options include finding good copy writers, web designers, auto-responders, and more. Savvy researchers realize that the value in what they eventually offer to the public will go into their product long before their websites are live. It is like an iceberg. The largest portion of it is always unseen by the public.

The question you are probably asking at this point is “Good Lord, how do you expect me to do all that”? It is a reasonable one. Thankfully, we have a rising cadre of very savvy marketers who understand the value of proper niche marketing research, and are willing to invest in it for the discerning few affiliates who are willing to use this service. I am of the firm opinion that you can find anything you want online. Good niche marketing research tools and services are not except either.
